This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The goal of this project is the measurement of clinically-relevant analytes in the blood tissue matrix of human subjects using near-infrared Raman spectroscopy, with the shorter term research directed towards glucose measurements for diabetic patients. This technology could greatly impact the healthcare practices for the entire population. In recent research we demonstrated detection feasibility of glucose concentrations in vivo from transcutaneous measurements of the forearm. The next hurdle is to demonstrate calibration transfer, i.e. apply the algorithm to data not utilized during the calibration procedure and successfully predict glucose concentrations. Our current efforts are directed towards this aim by means of a carefully designed program employing in vitro studies and in vivo dog and human studies.
