This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Mn oxides play an important role in the cycling of metals and organics, and bacterially mediated Mn oxidation is largely the source of these reactive Mn oxides. Many different phylogenetic and physiological types of bacteria have been demonstrated to oxidize Mn, yet the benefit or role these oxides play in bacterial physiology has not been determined. We are investigating the protective effects of Mn oxides to UV light, dessication, mechanical disruption, and phage infection. We would like to show that the Mn oxides produced by the bacteria physically coat the cell by TEM.
