This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Bone density in aging men of diverse race/ethnicity is a sub-study of Dr. McKinlay's NIH funded study Epidemiology of Urologic Disorders in Minority Men that will be conducted by New England Research Institutes (NERI) in collaboration with Dr. Michael F. Holick and his colleagues. This study is a cross-sectional Observational Survey of Aging Men's (OSAM) population based study of bone mineral density and parameters of calcium and bone metabolism that will be measured in blood and urine in middle-aged and elderly Hispanic, non-Hispanic Black and non-Hispanic White men. The significance of this project is that osteoporosis affects between 1 and 2 million older men in the United States. Men with osteoporosis have increased risk for fractures and fracture-related disability. Because most osteoporosis research has been performed in women, much less is known about this disease in men, especially of Hispanic and African American origin. This study will help provide information about risks of osteoporosis and possible approaches for prevention in this study population.
