This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The primary goal of this clinical research protocol is to determine the quantitative changes in circulating concentrations of vitamin D and its metabolites and other parameters of calcium and bone metabolism in response to multiple suberythemal exposures (of the abdomen, arms, back or legs) to simulated sunlight from a marketed flood lamp that emits ultraviolet light. Blood samples for determining vitamin D, 25-hydroxyvitamin D, parathyroid hormone, C-telopeptide (CTX), calcium, and albumin will be obtained before initiation of the protocol and at weekly intervals throughout the 1 month study. Subjects will go to the GCRC 3 times a week for 4 weeks, be in front of a flood lamp for 1 to 2 minutes (depending on skin type), and have blood drawn at baseline, beginning of week 2, week 3, week 4 and at final visit.
