This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Some people with a history of high blood pressure develop hardening and reduced flow in the deep blood vessel of the brain. This results in areas of decreased oxygen delivery, which then results in decreased energy supply and possible brain cell death. This condition is called " Small Vessel Disease" (SVD) . There is no current FDA-approved treatment for this condition. We at Stony Brook have been studying the effects of a dietary supplement , Poly-MVA, as a protection against Small Vessel Disease. This supplement acts as an "energy boost" ; it has the ability to transfer energy to cells. We believe this may prevent cell death in vunerable areas.
