THYROID HORMONE IN CHILDREN WITH FANCONI ANEMIA

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The purpose of this research study is to find out whether children with Fanconi anemia will grow taller when treated with thyroid medicine. Children with Fanconi anemia are often shorter than other children their age and do not grow to normal height. This may be due low levels of thyroid hormone in the body. This medicine raises thyroid hormone levels in the body. Thyroid is a normally occurring chemical messenger in the body that is needed to grow taller. The second purpose of this study is to find out what effect (good or bad) thyroid hormone has on blood counts. Each child will be randomized to receive either treatment or placebo first for a total of 7 months in each treatment period. Each child will be in the study for a total of 14 months.
