THE ROLE OF CORTISOL IN GESTATIONAL DIABETES MELLITUS

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. Pregnant Women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) will have an attenuation in their hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (H-P-A) axis which results in elevated total and free morning cortisol levels, discrete elevations in cortisol secretion throughout the day, and altered tissue response to cortisol. It is hypothesized that this functional hypercortisolism contributes to the increased insulin resistance seen in pregnant women with GDM versus normal glucose tolerance pregnant women.
