ASSESS CHANGES IN MEMBRANE LIPID COMPOSITION ON A HIGH PROTEIN, LOW CARB DIET

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This is a study looking at how a low versus a high carbohydrate diet affects the type of fats in fat tissue as well as in cells in the blood. We are interested in this because certain types of fats may either increase or decrease the risk of developing heart disease in the future. In this study, we will take blood samples over the period of a year to look at the membranes of cells and analyze the types of fats in the cells as each diet is followed. We will also take a small amount of fat from the buttocks region to examine the types of fatty acids (or fats) in the fat tissue. This will be done 4 different times throughout the year. The first sample of tissue will be taken before the assigned diet is started. The final sample of tissue will be taken 1 year after starting the assigned diet. We will also look at food records to see what types of foods are being eaten on each diet.
