This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains a major public heath problem globally. In the United States the incidence of closed head injuries admitted to hospitals is conservatively estimated to be 200 per 100,000 populations, and the incidence of penetrating head injury is estimated to be 12 per 100,000, the highest on any developed country in the world. This yields and approximate number of 500,000 new cases each year, a sizeable proportion of which demonstrate significant long term-disabilities. Unfortunately, there is a paucity of proven therapies for this disease [21]. This study of adult TBI patients is designed to characterize the association between the concentrations of selected blood and cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers and advanced neuro-monitoring parameters with patient outcome. Based on that analysis, potentially useful biomarkers may be identified. This may allow us to better stratify patients by the severity of their TBI, to monitor the progression of brain injury-induced pathology and recovery, to guide therapy and to predict outcome more accurately. Accurate patient stratification and valid methods of predicting outcome are vital to the subsequent conduct of future clinical trials in this patient population.
