This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. For their research on body fat and fertility, the lab uses a mouse mutant called the lethal yellow mouse. The gene, found at the agouti locus on chromosome 2, is lethal in the homozygous condition. Heterozygous mice live but have a phenotype called the lethal yellow syndrome (LYS). The LYS includes yellow coat color, adult onset obesity, and decreasing fertility apparently linked with increasing body fat. Currently the lab is studying the pregnancy success in mice raised on diets with low versus high fat content in order to examine how diet may modify the effects of the gene.
