This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Ion trap mass spectrometers (Finnigan) originally designed to operate only with an electrospray ionization source were modified to operate with MALDI ion sources. We continue to evaluate and refine the performance of these instruments used in the MALDI mode. Performance characteristics such a sensitivity and speed of sample analysis were determined to be excellent and the new configurations were found to be superb for solving challenging bioanalystical problems.
