This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. A challenging problem in physiology is the origin of 1/f fluctuations in the output of control systems and their alteration with disease and aging. It has been proposed that 1/f fluctuations are due to the interactions of multiple underlying control systems. We are studying small-world Boolean networks - a simple model for signaling networks that can generate 1/f fluctuations under certain conditions. The model can also be used to simulate the degradation of the networks under pathologic conditions.
