Theme E. Optical Biology: Improved Tools for in vivo Observation and Quantification Theme Leader: Gratton. Other Project Faculty: Marsh, Gross Overview of the Optical Biology Core This Center is concerned with spatial dynamics at many levels. Recent improvements in microscopy technology, probe development, image processing software, and specimen preparation have now made it possible to monitor dynamic behaviors in biological systems with a degree of sensitivity and resolution once thought impossible. The great hurdle now is useful quantification of the information we can obtain in the form of images. The goal of the CCBS Optical Biology Core is to develop, apply, and make available microscopy techniques for quantifying spatial dynamics in living systems. To this end, the core is not simply a collection of equipment and personnel to help keep things running. It consists of specific tool application and tool development projects, led by Center investigators.
