Representing seven schools of Tufts University (Medicine, Dental Medicine, Nutrition, Engineering, Arts & Sciences, Veterinary Medicine, and Graduate Biomedical Sciences), eight Tufts affiliated hospitals (listed below), the Tufts Center for the Study of Drug Development, the USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts, and the Tufts New England Medical Center (Tufts-NEMC) Institute for Clinical Research and Health Policy Studies, to address the challenge of the CTSA initiative, we have determined to: a) Create a new home for translational clinical research (TCR) at Tufts University, a cross-University, cross-affiliate Tufts Translational Clinical Research Institute (TTCRI), headed by an international leader in CR who will report to the University Provost, b) Provide a coordinated infrastructure to facilitate the spectrum of TCR by responding to the nine focus areas specified in the CTSA RFA and by creating four additional unique programs built on special Tufts strenths that will both accelerate and enhance the impact of CR. c) Enhance and expand the "CR Portal" at Tufts-NEMC as a TTCRI-wide central resource and develop on-site smaller CR Portals at our affiliated hospitals, thereby providing services and fostering interdisciplinary research collaborations and facilitating entry of new investigators into TCR. d) Building on Tufts' leadership as the first institution in the U.S. with a PhD program in CR in a graduate school of biomedical science, we will add to our current four MS/PhD Concentrations (Clinical Investigation, Epidemiology/Biostatistics, Health Services and Outcomes Research, and Medical Informatics), base on Tufts special strengths, two new Concentrations: Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) and Bench to Bedside Translational Research (B2BTR). Also, through distance teaming innovations, we will extend our reach to fellows and junior faculty in Western Massachusetts and elsewhere, and our K12 cadre will include a CR junior faculty member at each of the other three major Tufts hospitals outside Boston in addition to Tufts-NEMC. Our T32 program will lead to a joint MD or DMD with an MS or PhD in CR, or in conjunction with an MS in either nutrition or biomedical engineering, a PhD in CR. Through all aspects of training, including short courses, we will support and instill the culture of cooperative interdisciplinary research. Building on current Tufts strengths, the activities of the TTCRI will help achieve the transformation sought by the CTSA, and its benefit the health of the public.
