This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Short-term infections were induced in chimpanzees to obtain blood-stage parasites for genetic engineering studies, the extraction of antigen for serologic tests and the infection of mosquitoes through membrane feeding to produce infected mosquitoes for genetic engineering studies, production of monoclonal antibodies, sporozoite antigens for serologic testing, to test the efficacy of transmission-blocking and anti-sporozoite vaccines, and the production of immune sera. During the year three chimpanzees were infected with Plasmodium ovale; from these animals blood was collected and then used for these studies or frozen for future studies.
