This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Members of the Architectural Dynamics in Living Cells (ADLC) Program at the MBL are benefiting of facilities and interactions with staff members of the Biocurrent Research Center (BRC). Specifically, ADLC members use the cell culture facility for maintaining cultures of immortalized Drosophila cell lines for studying cell division and related motility. Cell cultures of Drosophila Kc cells are subjected to small interfering RNA to suppress the expression of specific proteins such as centrosomin. Cells that lack centrosomin lack mitotic centrosomes, which are located at the spindle poles. Live Kc cells dividing under those conditions are non-invasively observed using polarized light microscopy techniques that are being developed in the ADLC Program.
