This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources
provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. Primary support for the subproject
and the subproject's principal investigator may have been provided by other sources,
including other NIH sources. The Total Cost listed for the subproject likely
represents the estimated amount of Center infrastructure utilized by the subproject,
not direct funding provided by the NCRR grant to the subproject or subproject staff.
The 50-residue snake venom protein L-omwaprin and its enantiomer D-omwaprin were prepared by total chemical synthesis. Radial diffusion assays were performed against Bacillus megaterium and Bacillus anthracis; both L- and D-omwaprin showed antibacterial activity against B. megaterium. The native protein enantiomer, made of L-amino acids, failed to crystallize readily. However, when a racemic mixture containing equal amounts of L- and D-omwaprin was used, diffraction quality crystals were obtained.
