This is a Supplement application for the LEAP Center (P50MH115846) in response to the Notice of
Special Interest (OD‐22‐032) for research on Sexual and Gender Minority (SGM) populations. Research
indicates that SGM individuals are at higher risk of adverse outcomes due to psychiatric disorders
compared to those in the general population. But this has not yet been examined in the setting of a first
episode psychosis (FEP). The LEAP Center analyzes various FEP datasets and examines patterns of
clinical trajectory and outcomes. Therefore, we are ideally positioned to examine the impact of SGM
status in FEP populations. In this project, we will start by examining existing FEP datasets to understand
the characteristics of the SGM population within FEP, then we will conduct interviews and focus groups
to validate and extend the findings from existing data. Our preliminary data indicate SGM individuals
constitute a substantial proportion of the FEP population sand we expect that we may see adverse
outcomes within the SGM population.
