PROJECT SUMMARY
Background: A more explicit focus on health equity in implementation science is needed.
Incorporating a strong equity focus in implementation science requires not only the scientific
tools and processes, but also the workforce to carry out the research. We need more workforce
capacity, with particular growth needed among underrepresented minority individuals and other
historically disadvantaged groups (e.g., people with disabilities, LGBTQ populations).
Goal: The goal of this project is to create a robust and actionable mentoring and training plan
for under-represented scholars (URS) in implementation science for cancer prevention and
control that is both tailored to the unique needs and preferences of these scholars and
addresses cancer inequities.
Methods: This project builds on previous efforts to conduct an environmental scan of health
equity and implementation science training programs and will develop the curriculum and
mentorship plan (Phase 1). In Phase 2, we have two aims:
Aim 1: We will pilot test an equity in implementation science training course with a diverse group
of scholars and trainers. Activities will include: recruiting of scholars; planning and conducting a
course; and evaluating the course.
Aim 2: We will actively disseminate our findings to a set of core audiences (e.g., trainers,
researchers, funders). Activities will include: identifying key audiences and conducing active
dissemination of findings.
Innovations and impact: The proposed training program in implementation science and health
equity will fill a significant gap in capacity building. Scholar training will be designed based on a
set of evidence-informed competencies and a model curriculum specific to cancer equity and
implementation science will be produced. It will be developed with user-input to ensure it meets
the needs of URS to promote scalability and sustainability. The training program will be
applicable to numerous other health equity content areas.
