This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. Determine whether the population of healthy HIV-infected women in the era of HAART exhibits a higher than expected prevalence of osteopenia and osteoporosis. Identify risk factors of osteopenia and osteoporosis in this population, determine whether protease inhibitor use and body composition changes (lipodystrophy) contribute to reduced bone density in HIV-infected women as has previously been documented in HIV-positive men and identify mechanisms of osteopenia in HIV-infected women via analysis of inflammatory cytokines and bone turnover markers.
