This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Patients with sleep apnea are at increased risk for cardiovascular disease. Notably, apneic and hypoxemic events associated with sleep apnea have been linked to alterations in metabolic activity (i.e., glucose intolerance adn isulin resistance), increases in the systemic inflammatory response and an increase in reactive oxygen species, all of which could potentially increase the risk of cardiovascular illness. However, the relationship between nocturnal apneic episodes and cardiovascular disease in patients with sleep apnea has not been elucidated. The primary objective of this protocol is to determine whether sleep apnea is associated with an increase in metabolic, inflammatory and cardiovascular stress in patients with and without heart failure.
