This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. These investigators have demonstrated that iron metabolism differs in subjects with Restless Leg syndrome (RLS). They seek now to further characterize the mechanism of the relative iron deficiency observed in RLS. Patients with RLS may have reduced iron either from reduced absorption, increased turnover or increased excretion. These investigators hypothesize that RLS patients have lower absorption of oral iron than normal subjects when controlling for ferritin levels. Furthermore, they hypothesize that the apparent loss of iron observed in RLS patients is due to increased renal excretion of iron. In addition, the investigators hypothesize that RLS subjects will demonstrate a more rapid elimination or turnover of iron from the plasma pool than seen in normal subjects.
