This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Previous studies conducted by the PI suggest that patients with RLS and control subjects do not differ on measures of sleepiness(cognitive assessments and SIT tests). These studies are confounded by an important factor: Patients with RLS have, on average, 6 hours of sleep per night, whereas controls have normal sleep durations (6-8 hours per night). The purpose of this study is to compare patients with RLS and controls on measures of sleepiness while controlling for sleep duration. In particular, control subjects will undergo a 10 day period of sleep restriction prior to admission to the GCRC, where they and matched RLS patients will undergo assessments of cognitive function, SIT testing, and MRI studies.
