This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The research is sponsored by the American Nurses Foundation. The purpose of this study is measure skin temperature in the lower legs of adults with chronic venous disease to find out how much the skin temperature changes from day to day. The use of the information will help researchers to better understand the patterns of temperature change in the skin in hopes of finding a way to predict and prevent leg ulcers. Changes in skin temperature might be an early warning sign of ulcers. Skin temperature will be measured with two types of thermometers: a non-contact infrared thermometer and temperature sensors placed on the skin. Subjects ages 50-110 are being asked to participate in this study because they have had a leg ulcer due to poor vein circulation and might be at risk for developing another ulcer. The investigator in charge of the study is Teresa J. Kelechi, PhD, RN who is a certified wound care nurse and faculty member of the College of Nursing at MUSC. The study is being done at the Research Support Center located on the second floor of the Clinical Science Building at MUSC and will involve 15 volunteers.
