MESENCHYMAL STEM CELLS AND THE HEART

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) may become useful in repair of the heart. For this to occur, the mechanisms through which transdifferentiation must be elucidated. We will need to perform pre-clinical studies. To do this we must establish the ability of imaging to identify DS red transfected cells (with the Duke optical system) and Feridex labeled cells with (MR microscopy). The first step is to examine the cells in culture to determine the sensitivity of the available instruments; the cell culture will be done at UNC-Chapel Hill.
