This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,

for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
The Safety and Efficacy of Low and High Carbohydrate Diets for weight loss is a research study that was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of the most popular high protein, low carbohydrate diet, the Atkins' Diet, as compared to a more standard behavioral approach of a high carbohydrate, low fat diet. Despite the extreme popularity of the Atkins' Diet there has been very little evaluation in the scientific literature. Almost all data comes from antidotal reports. The Center for Human Nutrition at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center is one of three sites participating in this 5-year research study. Each site will be following 120 participants (60 men and 60 women) over a 2-year time period. Half of the participants will be randomized to the Atkins' diet and the other half to a diet based on dietary guidelines put forth by the USDA. All participants will be evaluated for changes in weight and body composition, metabolic and organ function, and ability to exercise at various time points.
