EFFECTIVENESS OF THE ATKINS' DIET FOR WEIGHT LOSS

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the effects of the Atkins' Diet, a popular self-directed weight loss program. Adult males (n = 10) and females (n = 10) will be randomly assigned to either the Atkins' Diet (high protein/low carbohydrate diet) or a standard behavioral treatment for weight loss (SBT) which consists of a low fat/high carbohydrate diet for one year. Atkins' Diet subjects will receive the Atkins' New Diet Revolution Book. SBT subjects will receive the LEARN Program for Weight Control. All subjects will be evaluated for changes in weight, food intake, blood chemistries and mood throughout the study. Results of this study will determine whether more systematic investigation in a larger study is warranted.
