This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Nine INBRE research projects were initiated at 4 baccalaureate institutions and 1 tribal college. Implementation involved ordering equipment, lab set-up, hiring staff and assistants (including students), and research itself. Institutions were generally very supportive in providing sufficient laboratory space, equipment and logistical support to the researchers. All schools were honoring the 50% release time by the spring semester. New laboratory space has been created at two of the schools expressly for INBRE. Every baccalaureate institution expanded their science faculty by at least one. Minot State established an IACUC and created a half-time VP for Research position. Turtle Mountain Community College is planning to establish an IRB. Development of the scientific network was facilitated by a fall retreat focusing on the mentoring relationships. The Spring Meeting included research talks by mentors and investigators, student poster session, introductions to core facilities, imaging and mass spectrometry workshops, a tribal college/state institution research partnering workshop, and a keynote lecture by a proteomics expert. There are 36 students at the PUIs working with researchers in some capacity; five of the students are located at a tribal college. Data was collected on their career plans. Many agreed to participate in a follow-up to track their progress in job or graduate school experiences. Of 26 respondents, 22 plan on pursuing advanced studies in the sciences (12 seeking a PhD). Communication is a priority. The first newsletter was published and a completely restructured ND INBRE website replaced the old BRIN site. A list serve is the means of dissemination of announcements. News releases made their way into television and newspapers across the state including a press conference at Mayville State University announcing the INBRE award. In attendance were administrators from NDSU and UND, members of the ND congressional delegation, and the Chancellor of the State Board.
