This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a heterogeneous syndrome of unexplained chronic hyperandrogenism. It appears to arise as a complex trait with contributions from both heritable and non-heritable factors. This study is to test the hypothesis that activating variants of 17¿-HSD5 contribute to hyperandrogenism in women and that a specific phenotype is associated with these variants. This project compares hyperandrogenic children and adults with stage- and weight-matched healthy controls. Outcome measure include ovarian and adrenal function test, glucose tolerance test, and pelvic ultrasound parameters.
