This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. We will test the hypothesis that a specific candidate activating 17¿-HSD5 gene variant (G-138), or other potential 17¿-HSD5 activating variants, interacts with the cellular factors to affect ovarian testosterone secretion in both normal and PCOS patients. The study includes study of the effect of successive 3-4 month courses of pioglitazone and depot leuprolide on the ovarian response to human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) stimulation before and after follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) priming. Healthy adult volunteers are studied to establish normal responses to hCG ¿ FSH testing.
