Shared Resources- Communication, Res Methods & Biostat, and Dissemination Cores
COMMUNICATION, METHODS, AND DISSEMINATION CORES
The Communication, Methods and Dissemination Cores will support research activities of CECCRII Studies
and provide centralized expertise in different disciplines. The Cores will build on experience from CECCR I, in
which early and ongoing collaboration by Cores led to better science and increased synergy across Studies.
COMMUNICATION CORE
I. Specific aims
The goal of the Communication Core is to create audience-centered and theoretically informed evidence-based cancerrelated
communications for CECCR research activities. We will accomplish our goal by achieving two specific aims:
1. Create theory-based, culturally appropriate intervention materials to inform and motivate target
populations in the studies;
2. Provide technical assistance in audience research and intervention material development for
developmental studies within and outside the CECCR.
The importance of evidence-based cancer-related communications is a major theme in NCI's Strategic Flan,
which emphasizes the need for culturally appropriate cancer information for at-risk populations to support
informed decision making (Strategies 5.6, 6.5, and 8.5).1 The CECCR IIRFA echoes the importance of these
strategies by calling for greater understanding of cancer communication (Goal 2) and production of evidencebased
interventions to modify cancer risk behaviors and improve informed decision-making (Goal 5).2
RESEARCH METHODS AND BIOSTATISTICS CORE
I. Specific aims
The goal of the Research Methods and Biostatistics Core (the "Methods Core") is to provide innovative
technological expertise, ensure adherence to rigorous methodological standards, and optimize data management and
statistical support for all CECCR research to maximize excellence and productivity. All products will be harmonized
across CECCR components and will be designed to facilitate data sharing. We will accomplish our goal by
achieving three specific aims:
1. Provide technical and methodological assistance to funded and proposed CECCR Studies and Cores,
including database design, training opportunities, and the development and application of measures,
research designs and sampling strategies which will be widely shared via the Dissemination Core.
2. Conduct all data management activities to ensure the quality of all databases and that all databases are
optimized for data sharing via investigator accessible data systems.
3. Carry out data analysis plans to answer research questions, contribute to the cancer communication
evidence base and generate new knowledge.
The goal of the Methods Core supports NCI's Strategic Plan, which calls for making experimental data
accessible across the cancer research community (Strategy 3.7),1 and is highly responsive to the CECCR IIRFA
which requires data sharing plans (Section IV.6) and harmonizing measurement and data across cancer
communication components (Section IV.2.5).2
DISSEMINATION CORE
I. Specific aims
In order to close the gap between the discovery and application of effective cancer communication strategies,
the transfer of evidence-based findings must be made through strategic dissemination efforts. A great deal is
known about effective interventions for cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.106 However, a significant
gap remains between lessons gleaned from research and application of such research advances in clinical and
community settings where lessons may be translated into improved early detection and treatment of cancer.107
Our CECCR seeks to narrow this gap between discovery and practice in cancer communication.
The goal of the Dissemination Core is to ensure that cancer communication findings and evidence-based cancer
communication interventions are disseminated to cancer control researchers and practitioners efficiently and effectively.
We will accomplish our dissemination goal by achieving three specific aims:
1. Develop a series of approaches and tools that will enhance dissemination planning and research in all
current, proposed and future CECCR-related studies.
2. Establish a national system for routinely sharing CECCR findings, evidence-based interventions, and other
cancer communication tools with strategic partners in research and practice.
3. Implement a national system to increase dissemination of evidence-based interventions and other cancer
communication tools.
The need for more effective application and dissemination of cancer research discoveries is a major theme in
NCI's Strategic Plan (Strategies 2.6, 3.8, 5.6, 6.1, 6.5, and 7.4)1 and in the CECCR IIRFA.2
研究中的人群;
