This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. During the reporting period we mapped the physiological properties of neurons in defined sub-regions of the rat and primate basolateral amygdala. In addition, we worked to determine the cellular mechanisms underlying the synchronization of projection neuron firing by inhibitory synaptic potentials. Our data suggests that spontaneous IPSPs interact with an intrinsic membrane oscillation that is present at membrane potentials close to threshold for action potential generation. We have evidence that three intrinsic membrane currents contribute to the oscillation and that these currents can be positively modified neurotransmitters that couple through the Gs G-protein second messenger cascade.
