LONG-TERM PHYSIOLOGIC EFFECTS OF GH IN HIV LIPODYSTROPHY

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. We hypothesis that long-term, physiologic GH administration to GH deficient patients with HIV lipodystrophy, defined based on responses to standardized stimulation testing, will improve, insulin sensitivity, cardiovascular risk parameters, bone density and body composition. In a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study, we will determine: A)The effects of long-term physiologic GH dosing on body composition, bone density and markers of bone turnover, CV risk markers including traditional lipid levels and novel inflammatory marker of increased CV risk, and glucose homeostasis; B)Whether the effects of physiologic GH treatment are sustained after GH withdrawal.
