STRATEGIES FOR THE TREATMENT OF HIV ASSOCIATED METABOLIC SYNDROME

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. Lifestyle modification and metformin are strategies that are likely to improve metabolic abnormalities in HIV-infected patients. Among HIV-infected patients treated with combination antiretroviral therapy meeting the NCEP-ATP III definition of metabolic syndrome, in which central adiposity, metabolic abnormalities and increased inflammation are present, we will test the following hypotheses: a. Lifestyle modification alone and metformin alone will result in improved central fat distribution and metabolic parameters. b. Lifestyle modification alone will improve cardiovascular indices and other variables more than metformin alone. c. Strategies of a combination of lifestyle modification and metformin will improve cardiovascular, body composition, inflammatory and metabolic parameters more than lifestyle modification alone or metformin alone.
