This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
This study will determine how it long it takes for metabolic rate to return to normal after weight loss. When people lose weight, their metabolic rate is reduced, but after some time, it appears to return to normal, although this issue is still debated. In this study, we will measure metabolic rate several times during the first few weeks after a target of 10% weight loss has been achieved. Subjects will remain under supervision of the GCRC dietitians for the next 3 months, and during this period, we will help them maintain their weight loss and measure metabolic rate at 1 month intervals. This will help us answer the question of whether metabolic rate remains depressed, and if not, how long it takes to return to normal. We will also measure selected hormones, proteins, and lipids in the blood during this period to determine if any of these variables are altered during the prolonged period of weight loss maintenance. We will ask subjects to return 1 year later and repeat the experiment, and we will also measure their body weight. We will then look to see if any of the measurements we obtained during the early portion of weight-loss maintenance predict how much weight is regained.
