Maternal chorioamnionitis and the resulting neonatal inflammatory response predisposes neonates to adverse outcomes icluding: chronic lung disease, intraventricular hemorrhage, periventricular leukomalacia, and cerebral palsy. Although the diognosis of chorioamnionitis is most accurately made by placental pathology, potential neonatal treatment with early anti-inflammatory medictaions would require a more rapid diagnostic measure of chorioamnionitis. We propose to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of gastric aspirate fluid obtained within four hours of birth as a predictor of histologic chorioamnionitis.
