Pathogenesis of cellulitis in broilers: effects of structural, biochemical, and molecular characteristics of the skin

蜂窝织炎是一种常见于肉类家禽的皮肤疾病。最近，在加拿大，蜂窝组织炎已经成为肉鸡和火鸡业的一个重要的谴责类别。蜂窝组织炎的一个重要的流行病学特征是蜂窝组织炎的致死率持续以惊人的速度增加。本研究提出揭开肉用禽蜂窝组织炎的病原学。本项目的主要目标是调查蜂窝组织炎的根本原因并找到可行的解决方案。本研究的主要目的将集中在：(1)皮肤一线防御机制在禽蜂窝组织炎发病中的作用，2)影响导致蜂窝组织炎病变的病原菌增殖动态的条件，以及3)在环境-细菌-宿主相互作用的背景下与蜂窝组织炎病变发展相关的病原学因素。彻底了解蜂窝组织炎的发病机制对于制定管理禽蜂窝组织炎问题的策略至关重要。预计从这项研究中获得的知识将有助于开发控制这种情况的方法。

Cellulitis is a skin condition observed commonly in meat type poultry.  Recently, in Canada, cellulitis has become an important condemnation category both in the broiler and turkey industries.  An important epidemiological characteristic of this condition is that the rate of condemnations due to cellulitis continues to increase at an alarming rate.  The present study proposes to unravel the etiology of cellulitis in meat type poultry.  The primary goal of this project is centered on the investigation of the underlying etiology of cellulitis and finding a practical solution to the problem.  The main objectives of this research will be focused on:  1) the role of first line defense mechanisms in the skin in the pathogenesis of avian cellulitis, 2) conditions that affect the proliferation dynamics of pathogenic bacteria involved in producing cellulitis lesions, and 3) etiological factors associated with the development of cellulitis lesions in the context of environment- bacteria-host interactions.  Thorough understanding of the pathogenesis of cellulitis is crucial for the development of a strategy for the management of the problem of avian cellulitis.  It is anticipated that the knowledge gained from this research will help in developing means to control this condition.
