The University of Saskatchewan filed a US Provisional Patent Application No. 61/922,156 for Waste Processing Methods and Systems, Olkowski, A. and Laarveld, B. on December 31, 2013. This technology concerns a multi-stage animal waste catalytic treatment and refining process with high potential to provide environmental and economic benefits for the Canadian agriculture livestock industry. The technology treats animal manure to reduce odour and greenhouse gas emissions, eliminate pathogens, and generate economic value through the production of fertilizer, clean water and high value bio-product streams. The catalytic treatment and refining system produces pure, high value micro and nanocrystalline cellulose and pure, high value lignin, which are suitable for use in the manufacturing of bio-composites and in other applications.
