High-pressure homogenizer for the creation of liposomes and amulsions

The high pressure homogenizer/extruder system to be purchased from this Research Tools and Instruments grant will support the activities of three researchers at Dalhousie University, working in areas relating to pharmaceuticals, marine extracts and food safety.  This equipment can be used to produce liposomes and emulsions with superior properties and for cell disruption.   The pharmaceutical research that will be supported involves the production of microencapsulated liposomal drug particles with the aim of improving stability and controlled-release properties for pulmonary delivery.  In addition, liposomal preparation will be important for the study of marine cationic antimicrobial peptides and their effects on food-related bacteria.  The high pressure homogenizer will also be used to extract enzymes from bacteria that have the ability to break down paralytic shellfish toxins.  It will also be used to study the potential for incorporating a chemically-modified antimicrobial peptide (extracted from herring milt) into food.
