Funding is requested to purchase a cold cathode optical microscope cathodoluminescence (CL) system for the Geology Department at Acadia University.  Such an instrument is routinely used in the geological and materials sciences to reveal textures not normally observable using standard microscopic techniques.  Currently, no university or government research institute in Nova Scotia has an optical CL system.  The purchase of one would greatly increase accessibility by eliminating the need to travel out of province, which would also reduce direct research costs and travel time that could otherwise be used for research.
