This research program will contribute to the international effort to enhance the confinement of the plasma within a tokamak fusion reactor. On a more local scale, the stability and reliability of the discharge in the STOR-M tokamak will be improved in order to increase the experimental effectiveness of the device; allowing the STOR-M tokamak to have a greater impact on the international effort towards a commercial grade controlled thermonuclear fusion reactor.  The STOR-M tokamak is Canada's only tokamak.  The importance, and the difficulty, of controlling various characteristics of the plasma to achieving successfully controlled thermonuclear fusion cannot be overstated. This research program will address plasma control issues. As a part of this research a novel detector will be developed in order to image the plasma column within the STOR-M tokamak; fully imaging the cross-sectional shape of the plasma column.  The capability of imaging the shape of the plasma column is not presently available on STOR-M; therefore this equipment will go a long way to enhancing the diagnostic complement of the device.  During this research program an improved digital plasma position controller will also be developed for the STOR-M tokamak.  This will be an adaptive controller, and will improve on the fuzzy logic based controller that was recently developed for use on STOR-M by the applicant. This project will help to ensure that Canada can continue to actively participate at the forefront of the field of controlled fusion research, and that we will have adequately trained personnel to continue to do so well into the future.
