Direct Current (DC) plasma torch is a device which makes it possible to generate and maintain partially ionized gases (plasmas) at high temperature (>10,000). Its industrial and scientific use is extremely diverse and ranges from thermal spray coatings to process metallurgy and to waste destruction.The objective of this project is to develop a high-power, efficient, hazardous waste incineration tool which is based on a novel direct current (DC) plasma torch operated with carbon containing gas mixtures. A prototype of the torch which operates at a power level of up to 70 kW has already been built, tested, and an application for a provisional US patent has been filed. Specifically, we propose to: Upgrade and build a newly developed DC plasma torch so that it can be operated at a power range of 150-300 kW. Plasma gases are a mixture of hydrocarbons and carbon dioxide. The cathode is made of highly ordered graphite.
