In the last decade, femtosecond optical spectroscopy techniques have been used with great success to probe various ultrafast phenomena related to the motion of electrons and atoms in solids. New developments related to optical pulse shaping techniques and the new possibilities offered by the generation of ultrashort pulses in the terahertz region have opened several research opportunities in the field of semiconductor nanostructures physics. Among them, we find studies of electronic properties of coupled quantum dots (QDs) and aligned dot chains, optical manipulation of spins in QDs, coherent control experiments in QD structures, tunneling transport properties and nonlinear optical properties of QDs in the presence of intense THz field. The objectives of this research program aim to address some of these fundamental studies using state of the art femtosecond optical technologies. This research could find several important scientific and technological applications in quantum computing, in communications, in remote sensing and bio-sensing, as well as in molecular engineering.
