Recent advances in the fabrication of solid-state nanowires (NWs) and quantum dots (QDs) structures open interesting avenues for photovoltaic and quantum computation applications. For instance, enhanced light to electricity conversion efficiency is expected through the insertion of QDs in the middle part of a multi-junction solar cell structure, or by using a radial P-N junction geometry for NWs-based cells. For quantum cryptography and quantum computation applications, QDs can be used as the active material of non-classical sources of photons as well as spin qubits-based logic gates.
