The stabilization and functionalization of nanoparticles by coating with suitable substances is central to many successful applications of nanoparticles be it for analytical purposes, in technical processes, or for pharmaceutical applications. The present proposal focuses on functionalization and stabilization of drug particles by coating. There are two reasons why coating of drug particles is so central to pharmaceutical applications. It helps to stabilize these tiny particles against agglomeration and coagulation. Both processes happen during particle formation and during storage of the particles leading to unwanted modifications which affect the bioavalability of the product. Furthermore, the right coating can be used to achieve a targeted drug delivery. A simple example is the pH-dependent release of a drug which can be achieved by coating with a polymer with pH-dependent solubility.Currently, however, the engineering and in particular the coating of drug particles in a controlled manner still represent a technical challenge. This severely limits the applicability of particulate drug formulations. The main objective of the present proposal is to overcome this limitation by setting up a novel device for coating of drug particles. The main goals are to produce drug particles with a well defined coating and to characterize their physical-chemical properties.
