With the publication of the document ``An Intelligent Transportation Systems Plan for Canada: En Route toIntelligent Mobility'', Canada has highlighted clearly its desire and main objectives in bringing ourtransportation system into the 21st Century, making it safer, efficient, and integrated. Recent advances in adhoc and sensor networks and wireless communication have made vehicle ad hoc networks a promisingsolutions to achieve these goals, however not without cretaing a new set of challenging issues and trade-offs.One of the most appealing applications, we will concentrate on in this project,is to propose an anytime, anywhere, fine-grained, and reliable time-space localization discovery andmonitoring system to be used by vehicles in VANets for critical safety and emergency applications. Ananytime requirement means that the localization system must be free of delays when computing the currentposition and synchronizing the clocks of the vehicles (e.g., no startup delay). This requirement is critical, since the high mobility of VANets means that slightly outdated position information cannot be used andcould even be dangerous. The "anywhere" availablity is a major challenge in VANet localization systems. It is therefore our goals to design efficient scalable time-space localtization framework for vehicle ad hocnetworks and safety applications. In these kind of applications,it is important that our localization protocols ensure fine-grained localization and synchronization errors. This project will provide the students the necessary skills in wireless communication, vehicle ad hocnetworking systems, and modeling and simulation. The PIs are basically responding to the high demands fromgovernmental agencies, IT industrial sector and academia in these areas.
