Peer-to-peer service composition management

The goal of this proposal is to investigate the benefits of peer-to-peer networks and multi-agent systems for the management of service compositions, i.e. distributed applications built dynamically with third party Web Services. The promise of such applications can only be fullfilled if there is a corresponding management infrastructure that: - monitors the correct composition and execution of the components; - detects violations of service level agreements; and - helps with the dynamic replacement of a service in case of failure. A centralized system to accomplish such tasks could lead to problems including: the creation of a bottleneck and single point of failure, the risk of bias and the lack of proper instrumentation. We propose investigating a distributed infrastructure to address the above issues. Nodes would then rely on a peer-to-peer network for the discovery of services and the evaluation of their reputation. The work will build on our experience with Web Service composition, peer-to-peer networks, feature interaction detection and trust acquisition.
