Development of a General Purpose Enterprise-scale Distributed IT System Tests Bed

This project seeks NSERC CRD funding to extend the capabilities of an industry initiated research project. Specifically, Enquisite Software Inc. of Victoria B.C. is seeking an enterprise-scale distributed IT systems test bed in which to explore capacity and performance breakpoints of provisional designs for the re-engineering of their current distributed data warehousing and data mining application. NSERC CRD funds will be used to leverage this industry project into the development of a more widely applicable general purpose distributed IT systems test bed. The requisite computer and network equipment required to build such a test bed already exists within the auspices of the University of Victoria's Information Security and Privacy Research (InSPiRe) lab, as this $500k+ base of equipment was acquired under a previous CFI New Opportunities/BC KDF/IBM Canada Inc. (in-kind) grant to develop the first-of-it-kind enterprise-scale cyber-security test bed in Canada. As developing an enterprise-scale distributed IT systems test bed is on the direct path to developing the end-goal cyber-security test bed, this slight repositioning of the InSPiRe equipment allows: (a) the overall research program to mover forward in a timelier manner, and (b) the better servicing of industry and academic collaborative research needs. As the InSPiRe test bed is intended to provide test bed research support for two in-progress trans-Canadian cyber-security research programs (i.e, the NSERC Strategic Network proposal: The Internetworked Systems Security Network (ISSNet) and the submitted MITACS full proposal: Gondwana: Towards Quantitative Security Metrics), both of being in their respective second stage submission/review processes, it is imperative that available lead time be used to bring InSPiRe's into operation. Combined these trans-Canadian cyber-security research programs will involve 20 researchers across 10 institution spanning coast-to-coast.
