Our research is in cell biology, and addresses how cells behave when they divide and move. We measure cell growth, changes in cell size, and the levels and functions of different proteins that are important to the cell. Most of our work involves cells that are first grown in culture and then manipulated in various ways to address the questions that we wish to answer. A central part of all of our research is to be able to handle the cells as we concentrate them in their growth media, expose them to different reagents in a liquid environment, or wash them free of materials to which they have been exposed. For this we need a centrifuge that is able to sediment ('spin down') the cells while keeping them cool and able to survive unharmed by the experience. Our existing machine is nearly 20 years old and at the end of its life. We need to replace it urgently and add certain functions that are now necessary for our work. This piece of equipment will play a central role in all that we do in our research, and will be a sound investment as part of our NSERC-funded quest for knowledge.
