An inert atmosphere glovebox with accompanying gas purification system, antechamber, and vacuum pump are requested. We require the glovebox to prepare and handle solid compounds to be studied by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. NMR is one of the most versatile and useful techniques for learning about the structure and dynamics of chemical compounds. The glovebox is required for the preparation and manipulation of chemical compounds which react with moisture or oxygen. Such chemicals cannot be easily handled in air. The glovebox provides an inert atmosphere (dry argon or nitrogen gas) so that reactive compounds can easily and safely be synthesized and studied. For example, we are aiming to study cobalt-59 nuclei in inorganic materials and important catalysts by NMR spectroscopy, and the glovebox will enable us to prepare these air-sensitive materials. The requested equipment will greatly enhance student and postdoctoral training opportunities, and in particular will immediately benefit three new 'highly-qualified personnel' trainees in 2009.
